Vol. 345 No. 1

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

312.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if a public telephone in a school (details supplied) in Dublin 8 will be repaired as this has been subject of a number of representations and as yet no action has been taken.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when the telephone exchange at Somerville Avenue, Dublin 12, which is under construction, will be completed and available for use.

It is expected that the exchange building will be completed early next year and that the new exchange will become available for service during the first half of 1985. It had been planned to have the exchange ready by the end of 1984 but this has been delayed due to a strike by some of the equipment contractor's staff.

314.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12.

I understand fully the frustration felt at the delay in providing telephones. Regrettably, however, it will not be possible to meet this application until necessary additional engineering work is carried out.

The objective of the Department's current telephone development programme is to provide a fully satisfactory telephone service nationally in terms of both quality and availability by the end of 1984 and it is expected that service will be provided for the person named within about six months.

It was expected that the necessary engineering work would be completed earlier. However, it was not possible to do so because of pressure of other urgent work.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will investigate the reason a business telephone (details supplied) in County Dublin has been out of order on so many occasions as it is seriously affecting business.

Service has been restored. Regrettably there has been a number of intermittent faults of short duration. These were due to congestion at the local exchange which it is expected will be cleared with the provision of a new exchange in mid-1984.

317.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when Castletownbere telephone exchange, County Cork, will be converted to automatic working; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is expected that Castletownbere exchange will be converted to automatic working during the first quarter of next year. It had been hoped to effect the conversion in September last but this was not possible owing to delay outside the control of the Department in the completion of certain essential advance works and to damage by lightning to cable and some other equipment serving the exchange.

318.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he has any plans for the improvement of the telephone service to Dursey Island, County Cork.

Automatic service is expected to be provided for Dursey Island in the first quarter of next year.

The circuit serving the public kiosk on the Island is due to be replaced shortly for maintenance reasons.
