Note

(1)The amount shown for "Others" relate to tax paid other than through the PAYE mechanism and are comprised of payments from self-employed taxpayers assessed under Schedule D together with a small amount collected under Schedule C.

Income tax on farming profits is collected with Schedule D tax generally and statistics are not available which would enable a reliable monthly breakdown of tax on farming profits to be given. However, it is tentatively estimated that the tax payments on farming profits in the period from January, 1983, to September, 1983, amounted to £11 million. The due date for payment of Schedule D tax (including tax payable on farming profits) assessed for 1983-84 is 1 October 1983, with a two months interest free period of grace. Most of this tax will be paid in late November or early December.

(2)This figure includes income tax paid by building societies in respect of interest credited to their investors.

(3)In view of the factors mentioned at (1) and (2) above, the figures set out in the table cannot be taken to represent an accurate picture of the relative income tax burden as between different categories of taxpayer for the year 1983 or for the tax year 1983-84.
