The system of assessment for admission to geriatric hospitals varies from health board to health board depending on such factors as the extent of the development of geriatric assessment facilities, the availability of consultant physicians in geriatric medicine and whether the patient is referred to the general practitioner, the general hospital or by other sources. Information on particular admission procedures may be obtained from the individual health boards.
