Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Physical Education.

326.

asked the Minister for Education the measures she has taken, in conjunction with her colleague who has responsibility for sport, to promote physical education in schools, in the favourable climate of an Olympic Year.

Physical Education is an integral part of the Primary Schools' curriculum.

A working party was set up in 1983 which included representatives of Cospóir, the primary branch of my Department, the managerial associations and the teaching organisations, to plan a sport for all day in national schools on 8 May 1984. This committee prepared a bilingual booklet which outlined how the day might be organised and gave guidelines relating the activities of the day to the total programme in physical education. The booklet was issued to all national schools.

My information is that the many schools organised a sport for all day and that it was a great success.

In addition, Cospóir organises seminars and other promotional activities on physical education and related topics which are attended by teachers and pupils and influence the promotion of physical education.
