An external quality assessment scheme in clinical biochemistry was funded and operated by the National Board for Science and Technology for a three year period up to April 1984. Proposals were put to me by the board regarding funding arrangements for the continuation of the scheme. I regret that because of competing demands from projects with higher priority I did not find it possible to make the proposed contribution available from the resources at my disposal.
