The number of live births registered in the State in 1983 was 66,815. This figure is provisional and may be adjusted somewhat when final figures are available. There are no figures available for the total number of children born in 1983 with physical or mental disabilities as a result of rubella. However, steps are now being taken to establish a congenital rubella syndrome register with a view to monitoring the necessity for and the effectiveness of the existing vaccination programme in respect of rubella.
