Written Answers. - County Galway National Schools.

asked the Minister for Education the progress being made on the planning of national schools (details supplied) in County Galway; and when planning in each case will be completed.

The following is the position in regard to the schools mentioned in the Deputy's question.

Lisheenkyle—My Department has agreed in this case to the erection of a new school comprising three classrooms, a general purposes room and ancillary accommodation. The Commissioners of Public Works are at present in consultation with the chariman of the board of management concerning the selection of a site.

Carnaun—My Department has agreed in this case to the erection of a new school comprising four classrooms, a general purposes room and ancillary accommodation. The chairman of the board of management has been asked to offer a site for the new school.

Coldwood—My Department has decided that the accommodation at this school should be brought up to three classrooms, a general purposes room and ancillary accommodation. A feasibility report on whether this should be done by extending the existing school or erecting a new school is at present awaited from the Commissioners of Public Works.

Athenry—My Department has approved the erection of a new boys national school here comprising five classrooms, a general purposes room and ancillary accommodation. At present sketch plans are awaited from the Commissioners of Public Works and evidence of title is awaited from the chairman of the board of management.

It is not possible to say at this stage when planning will be completed in any of the above cases.

asked the Minister for Education if she will approve as a temporary measure a demountable classroom for Coldwood national school in view of the serious overcrowding in the school at present.

My Department has agreed to grant-aid the provision of a prefabricated classroom at Coldwood national school, County Galway. The Commissioners of Public Works have been asked to advise the chairman of the board of management of the necessary arrangements for the provision of this unit.
