asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the number of persons from his Department who are currently on (a) paid educational leave and (b) unpaid educational leave; the nature of educational courses being pursued and the cost to the State in monetary terms and in services lost by such absences; and the average number of such absences and average cost to the State for the year 1984.

No members of the staff of my Department are currently on paid educational leave; two officers are on unpaid educational leave, both of whom are pursuing the BCL degree course in UCD. There is no cost to the State in monetary terms but as one of these officers could not be replaced due to the embargo there was a loss of service to the Department involved.

The number of absences and the average cost to the State in 1984 was as follows:
