Vol. 355 No. 10

Written Answers. - County Galway School Transport.

649.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware that children from the Lettermullen and Rosabhil areas of Connemara who are attending the comprehensive school in Carraroe, County Galway, are picked up by the school bus at 7 a.m. each morning and do not return home until about 5.30 in the afternoon; and if she will arrange for a more acceptable school transport service to be provided.

650.

asked the Minister for Education if she will restore the original school bus service for children from the Lettermullen area who attend the comprehensive school at Carraroe, County Galway.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 649 and 650 together.

CIE has proposed a re-organisation of transport services for Carraroe Comprehensive School, County Galway. The revised arrangements will be implemented on a trial basis. Different pick-up and set-down times will apply depending on where the pupils live, but I can say that no pupil will have a pick-up time as early as 7 a.m. Also, the majority of the pupils will have an earlier set-down time than 5.30 p.m. An improved standard of service will be available to most of the pupils under the new arrangements.

I have arranged to have the revised operation of the services monitored to ensure that an adequate service within the terms of the post-primary school transport scheme will be available to all the pupils concerned.
