Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

152.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason for the delay in payment of an unemployment assistance claim to a person (details supplied) in County Laois.

The unemployment assistance claim of the person concerned was disallowed on the grounds that his means derived from self-employment exceeded the statutory limit. He appealed against the amount of means assessed against him and an appeals officer also assessed him with means exceeding the statutory limit and disallowed his unemployment assistance claim. He was advised of the decision of the Appeals Officer on 23 January 1985.

153.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will reinvestigate the application for an increase in unemployment assistance from a person (details supplied) in County Laois.

The person concerned was assessed with means exceeding the statutory limit. He appealed against this decision and an appeals officer on 23 July 1984 assessed him with means of £84 derived from the profit from his holding. He requested that his means be reviewed and his case was reinvestigated by a social welfare officer in December 1984. His means derived from the profit from his holding were however again assessed at £84 per week. He is at present in receipt of unemployment assistance at £15.80 weekly being the appropriate long term rate £99.80 less £84 means.

154.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will approve an application for unemployment assistance from a person (details supplied) in County Laois.

The person concerned was not prepared to co-operate with the social welfare officer in the investigation of his claim and this gave rise to delay. He was then advised that he must co-operate in the investigation to enable his entitlement to unemployment assistance to be determined.

Following further inquiries by the social welfare officer his means were assessed at £15.75 weekly. His means were derived from the value of board and lodging in his father's home.

The person concerned is accordingly entitled to unemployment assistance at £14.20 weekly the appropriate rate £29.95 less means £15.75. All arrears due have been paid and weekly payments of £14.20 will continue to be made as they become due.

158.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason for the delay in the payment of arrears of unemployment assistance due to a person (details supplied) in County Laois for period December 1984 to January 1985.

The person concerned claimed unemployment assistance on 23 October 1984 and ceased to sign at her local office on 29 October 1984. Her case was referred to a social welfare officer for investigation of her means and she informed the social welfare officer that she did not wish to pursue her claim. She recommenced signing on 28 November 1984 and her case was again referred to a social welfare officer for investigation of her means. It was recently ascertained that the claim papers were not received by the social welfare officer as the documents appear to have gone astray in the post. Duplicate papers have been prepared and the case has again been referred to a social welfare officer for urgent investigation. When these inquiries are completed her means will be assessed and her claim will be determined.
