Vol. 356 No. 7

Written Answers. - EC Research Scheme.

491.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of allocations that have been made under the EC scheme for research into clean technologies.

I assume the Deputy is referring to the Council regulation on action by the Community relating to the Environment (No. 1872/84), adopted on 28 June 1984 which provides, inter alia, for Community aid to be granted for demonstration projects aimed at developing clean technologies and new techniques for monitoring the quality of the natural environment. The regulation provides 6.5 million ECU for such projects over a three year period.

The regulation provides for the publication by the Commission in the Official Journal of the European Communities of invitations to submit applications for support for appropriate projects. The Commission has not yet published such an invitation but has convened an Advisory Committee to consider the general conditions governing the submission, selection and level of financial support for projects. Ireland is represented on this Committee by an official of the National Board for Science and Technology. When the invitation to submit projects is published the Board intends bringing it to the attention of interested parties.
