Vol. 356 No. 9

Written Answers. - Return of Clothing.

453.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will obtain an explanation from the British authorities regarding their failure to return the clothes of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 3 who was detained in Liverpool on 24 December 1984, under the Prevention of Terrorism Act but was not charged and was released after six days; and if he will seek their immediate return.

My Department have been in contact with the appropriate British authorities about this matter. I understand that there is no difficulty about the return of the articles of clothing in question, which were retained to assist in police investigations, and that the Merseyside police informed the solicitor of the person concerned of their availability on 26 February 1985. The police felt that the clothing should not be posted to Ireland in case it should get lost and suggested that a nominee of the person concerned should collect it. The solicitor accepted this suggestion, subject to confirmation of his client's wishes. The Merseyside police are now waiting the solicitor's further response.
