Vol. 357 No. 12

Written Answers. - Non-Residential Diplomatic Relations.

555.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs (a) the estimated cost for 1985 of maintaining non-residential diplomatic relations with: (1) Bahrain, (2) Brazil, (3) Venezuela, (4) Qatar, (5) Mexico and (6) Iceland; and (b) the estimated annual cost of opening formal diplomatic relations with Nicaragua on (1) a residential basis and (2) a non-residential basis.

The estimated cost in 1985 of our non-resident diplomatic accreditation to the countries referred to is about £5,000 in each case. This estimate is subject to change in the light of circumstances in the case of any particular country. It would be inappropriate and contrary to international practice to engage in public estimating of the financial costs to the State likely to arise out of the establishment of diplomatic relations with countries with which we do not already maintain such relations.
