Vol. 357 No. 12

Written Answers. - County Waterford School Appointments.

634.

asked the Minister for Education if she will allow the Christian Brothers school, Lismore, County Waterford, to employ a full time woodwork-building construction teacher, a metalwork teacher and a career guidance teacher; and the reasons she has refused this request.

635.

asked the Minister for Education the reason for her refusal to retain the woodwork teacher at the CBS, Lismore, County Waterford; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 634 and 635 together. The appointment of teachers in secondary schools under the prescribed regulations and within the authorised quota of staff is a matter for the managerial authorities of the schools. In the case of the school in question incremental salary is currently being paid to one teacher in excess of the number warranted by reference to the relevant staffing regulations. It would not therefore be open to my Department to allow payment of incremental salary to any further teacher in that school.

County Waterford Vocational Education Committee were given an additional allocation of 400 teaching hours in order to make provision for the teaching of woodwork in this school in the current school year. This exceptional arrangement was to have ceased at the end of the current school year.

A request has however been received by my Department from the committee for an allocation which would enable them to provide the same service during the coming school year and this request is under consideration at present.
