asked the Minister for Justice the purpose for which the New houses and 60-bedroom unit constructed at Portlaoise prison were provided, and if they were intended as part of the proposed new prison complex.

, Limerick East): The 60 new houses for married prison service personnel and the staff residence for 60 unmarried personnel constructed on part of the prison farm in Portlaoise were provided to cater for the staff accommodation needs of the existing prison and the proposed new high level security prison. To an extent the accommodation built replaced existing accommodation which, as well as being in bad condition and deemed to be no longer suitable, needed in any event to be demolished for security reasons.
