Vol. 359 No. 9

Written Answers. - Eligibility for Educational Grants.

355.

asked the Minister for Education if the eligibility for grant aid in respepct of third level education in the North for students from the South who had attended a second level school in the North will be reviewed.

Under the provisions of the Local Authorities (Higher Education Grants) Act, 1968, local authorities are empowered to award grants only to persons who achieve prescribed successes in the leaving certificate examination of my Department. Accordingly it is open to local authorities to consider the award of grants to student who were educated in Northern Ireland and who sat for the leaving certificate examination provided the parents or guardians were ordinarily resident in the administrative area of the relevant local rating authority. The question of accepting successes in examinations other than the leaving certificate examination is, however, being considered.
