Arising out of a report in a newspaper in June 1985 that copies of leaving certificate examination papers had come into the possession of a candidate who was not named before the scheduled time, I requested the Garda authorities to investigate the matter. The Garda have since identified and interviewed the candidate involved. They have also examined all aspects of the security of the Department's examination papers.
While the Garda are still engaged in checking the account given by the candidate referred to in the newspaper article they are satisfied that the alleged leak did not occur within the Department either in Athlone or in Dublin. They hope to complete their inquiries and report to me shortly.
