Vol. 361 No. 2

Written Answers. - Motor Cycle Insurance.

42.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the serious discrimination against motor cyclists as outlined in the document entitled "The Insurance of Motor Cycle Pillion Passengers" issued by his Department; and if he considers that motor cycle users should have third party passenger cover similar to other motorists whether or not they intend to carry passengers with reduced insurance premium rates.

On 9 August 1985 I issued a discussion document dealing with the insurance of motor cycle pillion passengers. The document set out the present position whereby compulsory third party motor cycle insurance policies do not cover passengers on motor cycles. I set out four main options for dealing with this problem and invited interested bodies and members of the public to make submissions to my Department.

Almost 200 submissions have been received so far and the Department has been informed that further detailed submissions will be made shortly. All the submissions received will be taken into account before a decision is made by the Government. In the meantime, it would not be appropriate for me to make any further comment in the matter.
