Vol. 362 No. 3

Written Answers. - Computers for Special Schools.

16.

asked the Minister for Education if her Department provide computers for special schools for handicapped children in the same manner in which computers were provided to post-primary schools some years ago.

There is no scheme for the provision of computers in primary schools on the lines of the scheme for the provision of computers in post-primary schools as mentioned by the Deputy.

However, the Programme for Action in Education (section 3.15) provided for the establishment of a pilot project on the use of computers in a selected number of national schools, including special schools. Such a project was set up in the 1984-85 school year, initially in 30 schools, including six special schools. The project is now in its final year of operation and two further special schools have been associated with it. When the scheme concludes in June 1986 a report on the outcome of the project will be submitted to my Department.

Question No. 17 re-entered for oral reply.
