Vol. 363 No. 12

Written Answers. - Religious Studies.

102.

asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the introduction of religious studies as part of the leaving certificate course; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

A syllabus in religious studies was drawn up by a representative syllabus committee with a view to its introduction as an optional subject in the leaving certificate examination. As it was considered that the introduction of an examination in religious studies might require an amendment to the Intermediate Education Act, 1878, the advice of the Chief State Solicitor was sought. I intend to take the necessary action to facilitate the introduction of religious studies as a subject in the leaving certificate examination as soon as the necessary legal advice is available.
