Vol. 364 No. 5

Written Answers. - National Lottery.

28.

asked the Minister for Education the effort he has made to secure the proceeds of the proposed national lottery specifically for sport and recreation as was envisaged when the national lottery was first announced by his predecessor.

The Government indicated in Building on Reality, which was published in September, 1984, that a national lottery would be established, part of the proceeds of which would be allocated to the promotion of sport. Following further detailed consideration of the lottery proposals the Government stated on 17 October 1985 that the proceeds of the lottery will be used by the Government to assist sport and recreation, arts and culture, including the Irish language, and health.

While no decision has yet been taken regarding the precise division of the proceeds of the lottery, it is the intention of the Government that they should be used to assist, inter alia, sport and recreation.
