asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details of the expenditure of £30,000 on consultancy services in 1985; the name of the consultants employed; the number of consultants; the way in which they were recruited; and the number of tenders received for this work.

The expenditure incurred by my Department on consultancy services in 1985 totalled £24,844.85. Details of this expenditure are as follows:

* These appointments were made on the basis that the bodies concerned were the only bodies, or the best suited, to meet the Department's requirements effectivley.

In addition to the above, an ex gratia payment of £1,000 was made in recognition of assistance rendered in the preparation of Ireland's input to the formulation of European unified codes on the stability of structures. As the services were provided by firms of consultants and other bodies, details of the numbers of people employed on the work are not readily available.
