Vol. 364 No. 9

Written Answers. - Capital Cost of Harbours.

34.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry arising out of Parliamentary Question No. 96 of 18 February 1986, the capital cost of the Exchequer for harbours at Howth, Killybegs, Rossaveel, Dingle and Burtonport for the years 1964 to the end of 1985 and the amounts provided by way of grants for capital works in each harbour for 1986; whether the figures quoted in Parliamentary Question No. 96 of 18 February 1986, include unpaid amounts due to contractors, etc. on 31st December 1985, if not, the total sum due for payment in each case in 1986; and the loss to the Exchequer arising out of fishing between 1 January 1984, and the present; the number of resumed boats which have still to be sold and the number of the boats which have been sold outside the State.

The capital cost to the Exchequer for the years 1964 to 1985 inclusive and the amounts provided by way of grants for capital works in each harbour for 1986 are as follows:

(a) Includes cost of ferry terminus at Arranmore.

The figures quoted in Parliamentary Question No. 96 of 18 February 1986 did not include unpaid amounts to contractors. The only unpaid amount due at 31 December 1985 was £1,000 in respect of Howth.

I am assuming that the Deputy's reference to a loss to the Exchequer arising out of fishing relates to expenditure from the Vote for Fisheries. The net expenditure from the Vote in each of the years 1984 and 1985 was £15,949,349 and £17,308,000 (provisional) respectively.

At present, An Bord Iascaigh Mhara have seven resumed vessels awaiting disposal. Since 1982 four resumed vessels have been sold outside the State.

asked the Minister for Communications the capital cost to the Exchequer of Arklow harbour for the years 1964 to the end of 1985 and the amount provided by way of grants for capital works there in 1986.

Grant assistance provided to Arklow Harbour Commissioners in the years 1964-85 amounted to £780,500. A specific allocation has not been made for capital works at Arklow in 1986. Most of the money available to my Department in 1986 for grants to harbours has been allocated to approved projects. The balance is available for allocation to projects including proposed works at Arklow for which approval has been sought.
