Vol. 365 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prison Conditions.

28.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make representations to the British authorities regarding prison conditions (details supplied) in Magilligan Prison; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As permanent Irish ministerial representative at the Intergovernmental Conference, I am entitled under the terms of the agreement to present views and proposals on a wide range of issues including policy issues relating to prisons. I am aware of the complaint regarding prison conditions in Magilligan of which the Deputy has supplied details. As indicated by the Taoiseach in Dáil Éireann on 22 January 1986, however, it is intended that, in regard to matters relating to the Conference, answers to questions will be confined to details as contained in the joint statements issued after meetings of the Conference.
