Vol. 365 No. 4

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

73.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of houses built by each local authority for the years 1983, 1984 and 1985; the average cost for a three-bedroomed house in each local authority area for the year in question; the average cost for single rural county council house and the number provided in each area for the years in question; and the number of houses in each area for the years in question which were provided with ranges in their kitchens as against fireplaces with backboilers.

I would refer the Deputy to his Parliamentary Questions Nos. 64 and 65 of 13 November 1985 and the information subsequently sent to him which included details of the number of houses built by each local authority and the number of rural cottages built by each county council for the years 1983, 1984 and 1985. The information given in respect of 1985 related to completions up to 30 September which was then the latest available date for which figures were available. Accordingly, there follows a statement showing for 1985 house completions by each authority and the number of rural cottages built by each county council.

Information for each local authority area on the average cost of a three-bedroomed house and single rural cottage and on the number of houses provided with ranges in their kitchens during the 1983-85 period is not available in my Department. In relation to house costs, a statement showing the national average tender cost of a typical local authority dwelling (i.e. a two storey three-bed-room, five person house with a floor area of 81m²) broken down between urban and rural areas for the period from 1975 to 1984 was among the material forwarded to the Deputy in response to his earlier question. The corresponding figures for 1985 are £28,900 and £21,800 for urban and rural areas respectively. As with the previous material, these prices do not include land costs or costs arising from the operation of the price variation clause and may not include the cost of site development where this has been carried out under a separate contract.

Following is the statement referred to:
