Vol. 366 No. 6

Written Answers - Loans for Farmers.

76.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will give serious consideration to providing EC loans which are available at low interest rates for farmers in urgent need of extra finance to overcome recent financial difficulties; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

At the recent meeting with representatives of the two main farming bodies, the Taoiseach and the Ministers for Agriculture and Finance indicated that even though domestic and international influences favoured further early reductions in interest rates, they were prepared to give sympathetic consideration to the introduction of a scheme whereby low cost Eurocurrency funds would be made available. Discussions on such a scheme are in progress with the financial institutions.
