Vol. 367 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cross-Border Development.

18.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn on to a statement by Mr. Dennis Kennedy of the European Commission in Belfast that more money would be on the way if the British and Irish Governments could agree to cross-Border projects; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy is no doubt aware that the Regional Fund regulation which came into effect on 1 January 1985 provides for Community programmes which involve more than one member state. While no joint programme involving areas North and South of the Border has yet been approved under the new regulation, the Deputy will recall that the Irish and British Governments have in recent years collaborated effectively on development projects for the Border regions, under the Regional Fund. They will continue to promote worthwhile projects through the structural funds and the other financial instruments of the European Community where this is financially feasible.
