Vol. 367 No. 6

Written Answers. - Restrictive Practices.

17.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the steps he proposes to take to eliminate serious restrictive practices being operated by building societies in (1) insurance, (2) the appointment of solicitors, and (3) valuation.

Limerick East): Certain of the practices referred to by the Deputy have been dealt with in published reports of the Restrictive Practices Commission and in the Discussion Document on Legislative and Regulatory Arrangements in relation to Building Societies which was recently circulated by the Minister for the Environment. The Minister for the Environment is pursuing matters arising from that discussion document.

The implementation of relevant recommendations made by the Restrictive Practices Commission will require the prior amendment of the Restrictive Practices Act, 1972; I expect to present an amending Bill to the House shortly for this and other purposes. Other recommendations in relation to solicitors are being taken into account by the Minister for Justice in his review of the Solicitors Acts.
