Vol. 370 No. 1

Written Answers. - Grant for Irish Studies.

58.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if it is his Department's intention to make a grant available for research and project work for Irish studies to organisations in Britain working with Irish nationals there; if so, the extent of grant he proposes making available; which organisations will benefit from the grant and by how much; the criteria he has used for favouring one organisation over another; and if he will make a statement on these matters.

There are two sources of funds in my Department's vote which would appear to cover the type of activity referred to in the Deputy's question, viz, Subhead E (grant-in-aid for Cultural Relations with Other Countries) and Subhead I (North-South and Anglo-Irish Co-operation).

In allocating funds under Subhead E, I am advised by an independent Cultural Relations Committee on the merits of particular cultural projects abroad so as to enable me to take the necessary decisions.

As regards Britain, a full list of projects assisted in the current year is attached.

Under Subhead I, organisations which meet the criteria that their activities promote North-South or Anglo-Irish co-operation are assisted. As regards Anglo-Irish co-operation, Anglo-Irish Encounter was initiated in July 1983 by the Irish and British Governments and is the organisation receiving such funds. Encounter arranges periodic conferences and seminars on economic, social, cultural and other matters with a view to promoting mutual understanding and co-operation. In 1985 one such conference concerned Irish Studies in Britain. Encounter has received the following grants from my Department's vote (Subhead E): 1984/85 — £30,000 and 1986 — £10,000.

The Deputy will appreciate that it is not possible to be specific about future intentions in relation to the disbursement of such funds. In all cases the main criteria applied are the merits of the activity and the availability of funds.
