Vol. 370 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tuar Mhic Éadaigh, County Mayo, School.

116.

asked the Minister for Education the financial and other terms of the lease in 1961 and the sale in 1981 of Coláiste Mhuire, Tuar Mhic Eadaigh, County Mayo, to the Mercy Sisters; if it is now proposed to repossess the property and lease or sell it on the same terms to a committee which will guarantee the continuation of all-Irish education there; if he is satisfied that the original tenants and owners complied with all the terms of the lease; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Coláiste Mhuire, Tuar Mhic Éadaigh, County Mayo, is a private secondary school owned by the Sisters of Mercy.

The lease referred to in the question was drawn up between the Commissioners of Public Works, and, jointly the Sisters of Mercy and His Grace, the Archbishop of Tuam. As regards the financial terms of the lease it is not in accordance with established practice to disclose such details. I am satisfied that all the terms of the lease have been complied with in full.

My Department would be prepared to give sympathetic consideration to any proposals for the continuation of the school as an all-Irish post-primary school.
