asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the investigations, if any, which have been carried out into allegations that messages from the Irish Embassy in London were being intercepted by British signals intelligence; the investigation, if any, which has been carried out to establish how it was apparently possible that cypher equipment was installed at a cost of almost £1 million; the outcome of any such investigations; the representations if any, which have been made to the British authorities on these matters; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It would be inappropriate for me to make public, details relating to the security of official communications between my Department and its missions abroad. However, I am satisfied that my Department can communicate with our missions in a secure manner and I can assure the Deputy that all necessary steps are taken, as a matter of course, to maintain the security of official communications.
