36.

asked the Minister for Finance the estimated savings, expected in each Department of State in 1987, resulting from the implementation of the Government policy on public sector numbers as outlined in pages 12 and 13 of his Budget Statement of 31 March 1987.

63.

(Limerick East): asked the Minister for Finance the estimated savings in each Department of State in 1987, resulting from the implementation of the Government policy on public sector numbers as outlined in pages 12 and 13 of his Budget Statement of 31 March 1987.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 36 and 37 together.

The Civil Service is the only significant part of the public service for which I have direct responsibility. The £4 million saving on foot of restrictions on the filling of vacancies announced in the budget is reflected in the revised Estimates for Public Services recently published.

Details of the relevant allocations for each Department of State are set out in the following schedule together with the corresponding allocations provided for in the Estimates for Public Services (Abridged Version), January 1987.

Provision for non-industrialised Civil Service salaries, wages and allowances (mainly subhead A)

The figure of £5.051 million is made up of the £4 million saving referred to in the reply and other savings announced in the budget principally relating to closing down the farm classification office.

The changes in ministerial-departmental responsibilities decided by the Government have necessitated substantial revisions to a number of Votes. These changes which have been incorporated in the revised Estimates involve mainly (i) the amalgamation of the Votes for the Office of the Minister for the Public Service and (ii) the restructuring of the Fisheries, Tourism and Communications Votes into the Marine (No. 35), Tourism and Transport (No. 40) and Communications (No. 41) Votes. As a result, the revised Estimates for these Votes are not comparable with the original 1987 Estimates.
