Vol. 373 No. 1

Written Answers. - Coarse Fish Conservation.

18.

asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the extreme concern expressed by angling clubs at the amount of coarse fish being taken from our lakes and rivers by individual foreign anglers, and the effects this abuse will have on tourism in the future; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the concern expressed by angling clubs and other interests regarding the number of pike being taken from our lakes and rivers. This concern was taken into consideration when the Conservation of Pike By-law No. 654, 1986, was brought into effect recently.

This by-law provides that subject to certain exceptions, no person shall take and kill more than three pike in any one day, and it also provides for a prohibition of possession of more than ten dead pike.

The by-law will be reviewed when it has been in operation for a period of a year, or thereabouts.
