Vol. 373 No. 8

Written Answers. - Repayment of Superannuation Contributions.

218.

asked the Minister if, in a case (details supplied) in Dublin 15 all superannuation payments are now repayable; and the total amount involved and when it will be repaid.

Up to this year, certain superannuated staff in voluntary hospitals who resigned having more than five years reckonable service were not entitled to a refund of the superannuation contributions paid by them, but were, instead, entitled to have their pension rights preserved until age 60. Under new arrangements introduced this year, the staff concerned can now opt to waive this right to preserved benefit in lieu of a refund of contributions. In the case concerned, the employing hospital has been authorised to refund the contributions paid, which amount to £4,661.79. A deduction of 10 per cent to defray liability for income tax will have to be made from the gross amount refunded.
