Vol. 373 No. 8

Written Answers. - Career Breaks for Teachers.

256.

asked the Minister for Education the number of teachers employed by County Kerry Vocational Educational Committee for 1986 to 31 August 1987, who are at present on career breaks; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the chief executive has stated that these teachers may not be re-employed; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

According to my Department's records three (3) teachers employed by County Kerry VEC are on career breaks in the 1986-87 school year.

I am not aware of any statement made by the chief executive officer of County Kerry VEC on the question of the re-employment of teachers who were granted career breaks.

In regard to the re-employment of post-primary teachers on career breaks I would point out that paragraph 6 of my Department's circular letter 44/85 which details the scheme for career breaks for teachers provides that: "Post-primary teachers will retain an entitlement to resume duty in a permanent post on the termination of the approved period of the career break...."
