Vol. 373 No. 13

Written Answers. - Clare Bovine TB Incidence.

49.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if the incidence of tuberculosis in cattle has been increasing in County Clare; if he will designate north-west Clare as a special area for particular attention by his departmental veterinary surgeons; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The bovine tuberculosis situation in County Clare has shown a marked improvement in recent years. The number of herds restricted due to TB has fallen from a peak of 605 in November 1985 to 438 in November 1986 and to 266 at present. This improvement should be maintained during the course of the present round.

High levels of bovine TB have been present traditionally in north-west Clare notably in the Burren, though improved results have been achieved there also in recent years. My Department will be devoting particular attention to this area during the present round with a view to bringing about a further reduction in disease levels over the coming months.
