Vol. 373 No. 13

Written Answers. - Telephone and Postal Costs.

100.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the estimated amount that the Department will pay to Telecom Éireann and An Post during 1987 for services rendered; if it is possible to make savings in these areas of expenditure; and if he will give the corresponding figures for the 1986 outturn.

Estimated expenditure by the Department of Tourism and Transport as published in the Book of Estimates for the nine month period April/December, 1987 is as follows:

Telecom Éireann

An Post

£756,000

£28,000

As the Department was only established on 31 March 1987 corresponding figures for 1986 are not available.

The bulk of the expenditure is required to cover the cost of essential telecommunications services and installations used for aviation and meteorological purposes. Constant monitoring and control of this expenditure is exercised on a monthly basis.
