Vol. 374 No. 1

Written Answers. - Housing Loan Applicants.

212.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the needs of Donegal County Council for additional money to meet the urgent requirements of housing loan applicants in County Donegal, many of whom have been forced to negotiate short term loans from local banks at high interest rates which they cannot afford; and if, in view of the serious situation in which many of these applicants find themselves, he will allocate, as a matter of urgency, additional money to meet these needs; and when such money will be paid to the county council.

Donegal County Council have, so far this year, drawn £4.209 million from the Local Loans Fund and the Housing Finance Agency to finance housing loans. On the basis of the capital allocation made to the council earlier in the year £979,000 remains to be drawn. Following a recent review, a further £1 million is being made available to the council which will be sufficient to meet the demand for loans for the rest of the year. These funds may be drawn by the council as the need arises.
