Vol. 374 No. 3

Written Answers. - Irish Citizens in Iran and Iraq.

26.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of Irish citizens in (a) Iraq and (b) Iran; the arrangements, if any, he is making to evacuate them should the necessity arise; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department estimates that Irish citizens in Iraq and in Iran number 335 and 44 respectively.

Contingency plans exist for the evacuation of our citizens from both countries should the need arise. These have been drawn up in consultation with our EC partners.

As I am sure the Deputy will appreciate, I do not consider it to be in the public interest to reveal details of these plans.
