Vol. 374 No. 9

Written Answers. - Amalgamation of VECs.

38.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education the savings, if any, which are estimated to arise from the amalgamation of the vocational education committees; the way in which these savings are to be achieved, arising from her 22 October statement; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

As I have already stated in a reply to a previous question on this subject on 28 October last, I am at present considering the various options for revised structures of vocational education committees. In the circumstances, I am not in a position at this stage to announce the details of the amalgamations. However, I shall do so shortly.

The legislation necessary to give effect to the revised structures is in the course of preparation and I will bring it before the House as soon as possible. It is estimated that significant savings will arise from the economies of scale inherent in the amalgamations. I am also confident that the revised structures will enable VECs to provide a better service for all.
