Vol. 375 No. 1

Written Answers. - Illegal Importation of Arms.

50.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will take such steps as are necessary to reform our laws to enable Irish courts to punish those brought before them in respect of any illegal importation of arms, or any attempt or conspiracy to import arms, irrespective of where the attempt is made or where the arms are discovered.

I am taking it that this question is related to recent events involving the discovery of a cargo of arms and ammunition off the French coast about which I made a statement to the House last week. I am satisfied that the law relating to the illegal importation and possession of firearms is in general adequate for the purpose of punishing offenders. I am of course prepared to take any steps that are necessary should it emerge at any time that legislative changes are required.

Question No. 53 withdrawn.
