Vol. 375 No. 1

Written Answers. - Clondalkin (Dublin) New Prison.

49.

asked the Minister for Justice when the new prison at Wheatfield, Clondalkin, Dublin 22 will be opened; the total number of staff that will be employed there; whether these people will be redeployed from other sections of the public service or new recruits; and the number and type of prisoners he expects to accommodate in the prison in the first year.

Construction of the place of detention at Wheatfield is scheduled for completion early next year and it is expected that it will be ready for occupation by March or April. It will cater for 320 male juvenile offenders in the 16 to 21 years age group.

Staffing implications for the opening of Wheatfield are under consideration at present but final decisions have not yet been taken.
