Vol. 375 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Clerical Assistance.

103.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider presenting the Government with proposals to employ temporary clerk-typists in Garda stations throughout the country to enable gardaí to carry out the work for which they are trained.

As indicated in reply to Question No. 34 on 13 May 1987, the appointment of additional civilian clerical staff to Garda offices — on either a temporary or permanent basis — cannot be considered in isolation from overall Government policy in relation to staffing in the public service. However, my Department is at present examining the possibility that suitable civilian clerical staff, who may be made redundant elsewhere in the public service, could be redeployed to Garda offices so that gardaí could be released for outdoor operational duties.
