Vol. 375 No. 3

Written Answers. - Thurles Sugar Beet Factory.

45.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the position regarding the future of Thurles sugar beet factory, County Tipperary; if he will guarantee that the operation there will be developed and expanded as promised prior to the last election; if he will give details of the proposed development, if any; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The operation of the three sugar beet factories, including Thurles, is a matter primarily for the board of Siúicre Éireann which is, in common with other commercial state bodies, required by the Government since 1983 to submit and annually up-date a five year corporate plan.

I understand that the board will shortly be considering a draft plan from management to update the existing plan. The board's decisions will be studied carefully when they are submitted to me and will be followed up appropriately with the company.
