Vol. 376 No. 7

Written Answers. - Extradition Statistics.

43.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons who have been extradited to (a) Great Britain and (b) Northern Ireland in each year since the coming into force of the Extradition Act, 1965; the number of those extradited in each of (a) and (b) above who have been prosecuted for the offences for which they have been extradited; the results of each such prosecution, that is whether or not the person prosecuted was convicted of the offence or offences charged.

At present Garda extradition statistics are compiled in a way which does not provide the information which I would need to reply to this question. I have asked the Garda authorities to compile their statistics differently in future, so that information such as is requested in this question may be readily available.

It has not been the practice up until now for the Garda to monitor the results of prosecutions taken arising out of the extradition of persons to other jurisdictions. Accordingly I am not in a position to provide the information sought in the final part of the question. However, such information will be compiled from now on to enable the Government to comply with the provisions of section 6 of the Extradition (Amendment) Act, 1987.
