Vol. 377 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tallaght (Dublin) Sporting Facilities.

93.

asked the Minister for Education if, given the high level of unemployment in the Fettercairn area of Tallaght, Dublin 24, and the consequent difficulties for voluntary and sporting organisations in arranging adequate funding, she will sanction a grant of £5,000 to Fettercairn boxing club, Fettercairn, Tallaght, Dublin 24, towards the purchase of equipment and other administration costs.

The funds allocated to my Department from the proceeds of the national lottery are designated for the provision of grant-aid to national sporting organisations, for the development of programmes aimed at increasing participation in sport and recreation and for the provision of facilities at national, regional, local and community level.

In 1988 a sum of £500,000 has been allocated for the provision of grants to national governing bodies of sport for the development of "Sport for All" and the provision of sporting opportunities in deprived areas. It would be open to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association to apply for funding from this source in respect of a project in the Fettercairn area.

My Department do not grant-aid individual clubs for equipment and administration purposes. However, the Department operate a scheme of grant-aid to vocational education committees for youth and sport activities at local level. Fettercairn Boxing Club should, therefore, make inquiries about the availability of funds from that source from County Dublin Vocational Education Committee.
