Vol. 378 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Sector Remuneration.

1.

asked the Minister for Finance the annual cost of a 1 per cent salary increase to the grades covered by the Gleeson Committee.

The annual cost of a 1 per cent salary increase for the grades covered by the Review Body on Higher Remuneration in the Public Sector and directly related groups would be about £260,000.

Will the Minister say whether any further discussions have taken place with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions on the Glesson report and whether he has come to any decision regarding the implementation of its recommendations?

No further discussions have taken place with ICTU and no arrangements have been made yet but we did say that we would discuss the matter further with them.

Can the Minister confirm that a submission was received by him from the executive of Congress?

I can confirm not only that but that I met representatives of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions on at least two occasions regarding this question.

Can I take it that the figure of £260,000 given by the Minister does not take account of the additional tax that would be received, probably at 58p in the £, from the people concerned?

No, it does not.

So the net cost would be less?

It would be much less.
