Vol. 378 No. 9

Written Answers. - Family Mediation Service.

55.

asked the Minister for Justice (a) the total number of staff employed in the Family Mediation Service, (b) the total number of (1) male and (2) female counsellors; if he has satisfied himself that there are sufficient female counsellors available to deal with the family mediation queries raised; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The total number of staff employed in the Family Mediation Service is six — one full time co-ordinator, four part time mediators and one full time secretary. All the staff are female. Having regard to the fact that the service is a pilot scheme which was set up in July 1986 for a period of three years and that the number of mediators employed is the number recommended by the steering committee whose report led to the setting up of the pilot scheme, I am satisifed that the number so employed is adequate.
