Vol. 379 No. 10

Written Answers. - Open University Courses.

65.

asked the Minister for Education whether he has reviewed the situation regarding the availability of accredited Open University courses in the Republic of Ireland; the reason such courses are not more generally available here; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department are at present in consultation with the National Distance Education Council (NDEC) and the Higher Education Authority on the question of making UK open university courses available here in co-operation with or through the NDEC.

The present policy is to develop a national distance education programme here involving the use of courses and course material from the open university and other distance education bodies. The NDEC has been having discussions with the open university with this end view.
