Vol. 380 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sale of Health Board Lands.

147.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the recent controversy arising from the sale of lands held in the ownership of the Southern Health Board; whether the interest of the taxpayers would be better protected if, in these instances lands, or items for sale were to be sold by way of public auction with a reasonable reserve; if he will make such a recommendation to the Southern Health Board; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that there has been some controversy over the proposed sale of lands by the Southern Health Board. It is a matter for the board to decide on the method of sale, taking account of local circumstances and of the professional advice obtained. The sale of land, however, is subject to my consent and, as is customary in such cases, I will seek the advice of the Valuation Office as to whether the price offered is fair and reasonable, thereby protecting the interests of the taxpayers.
